Psychological reactance is the motivation to re-establish freedom which had been threaten or eliminated. When people feel like they lost their freedom of behavior, they would be aroused and take action to retrieve it. One of the ways people re-establish their freedom is to take counter action. For example, doing things which have been forbidden or contrary to orders. Past research has found that if people think their freedom of behavior was important, the threat to freedom would cause stronger psychological reactance. But we think “psychological reactance” could have different directions : “force to do” and “force not to do”, and have different influence on people.
We designed four scenarios as research material, then used two samples to process quasi-experiments with 3X2 between–subject design: type of reactance (“force to do” ,“force not to do” and control)and involvement (high involvement vs. low involvement).
Study 1(multiple choices scenario): Using 100 college students as participants, results showed that: (1) In multiple choices scenario, if participants can differentiate the choice clearly, they will have less psychological reactance. (2) In multiple choices scenario, when participants can not differentiate the choice clearly, “force to choose” and “force not to choose”, they will have strong psychological reactance, especially in the high involvement condition.
Study 2(single choice scenario): Using 165 college students as participants, results showed that:(1) In single choice scenario, participants have significant psychological reactance in both high involvement condition and low involvement condition. (2) The effect of “force to choose” is not stronger than “force not to choose”. Finally, contributions, limitations, and future research directions were discussed.
