Intense population expansion in urban area results in diverse activity and travel behaviors, along with the changing of land use. For urban planners, how land use and location influence travellers’ decision deserved particular attention. Recently, with the invention of smart devices, positioning systems and various sensors, obtaining real-world human behavioral data has become less costly and thus enabling researchers to gain insights into city dynamics.
Bike sharing system (BSS) is a service in which bicycles are provided for shared use and making short-term trips. BSS has grown rapidly across the globe for resent years. Data sets provided by automated system consist of records for each pickup and return, including station and time stamp.
In this research, cluster analysis approach is adopted to analyze trip history data from Kaohsiung bike sharing system. Bike stations are clustered based on temporal pattern of pickups and returns record. The analysis results revealed that each cluster differed from one another. Pattern and intensity of land use within bike stations’ service range is unique in each cluster. In addition, shared-bike users’ have specific behaviors depends on the type of stations they departed from.
