Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of rear-weighted shoes on lower extremity kinematics and ground reaction forces when college badminton players perform right-forward lunge footwork. Methods: Twelve college badminton players were recruited for this study. Each individual was asked to wear non-weighted shoes and rear-weighted shoes with 50, 100, 150, 200 or 250 grams added in a randomized sequence and to perform right-forward lunge and stroke a shuttlecock. A motion capturing system and a force platform were synchronously utilized to record lower extremity kinematics and ground reaction force signals. One-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to identify any significant difference among the non-weighted and the five rear-weighted conditions. Results: There was no significant difference in impact force peak, mean loading rate, knee angle, foot velocity, sole angle and lunge distance among non-weighted shoes and rear-weighted shoes with 50, 100, 150, 200 or 250 grams added (p >.05). The insignificant results in kinematic variables could be because that the differences among the added mass were very small, participants used similar landing strategies and ended up producing similar ground reaction forces. It is also possible that the participants have used their own specific landing strategy to deal with different weight conditions. Conclusion: When performing basic footwork training in badminton, if the mass added to the rear part of the shoes is less than 250 grams or the total mass of each shoe is less than 573 grams, the badminton players will exhibit similar lower extremity kinematics and are not subject to larger ground reaction forces which can cause injury because of the additional weight.
