Study of impacts of culture on craft is indispensable to the growth of craft industry due to the fact that cultural factors play an important role in consumers’ decisions to buy crafts. Cultural values in craft are not only manifest through what people can feel through the figure of the crafts but also through work activities of that makes up of the crafts by craftsman. So to comprehensively understand the impacts of culture on craft, beside the explicit values, implicit cultural values which influence craftsmen in their work should be fully consider and explore. Therefore, this thesis’s goal is to explore which cultural values impact work activities of craftsmen and how those cultural values are conveyed into crafts to make them bring more cultural meanings as well as cultural beauty.
Firstly this study reviews and analyzes theoretical backgrounds related to culture, values and craft. Upon those references, a theoretical framework to explain and describe the influence of cultural values on craft and crafts’ meaning through craft activities is proposed. Then, this study examines the validity and feasibility of the framework through the case study of the Cham traditional pottery in Vietnam. Qualitative research is adopted by in-depth interview and direct observation of experienced craftsmen at the Cham Bàu Trúc pottery village; content analysis methods are applied to analyze collected data. The empirical result indicates that the Cham traditional pottery in Vietnam is strongly impacted by ‘conservatism’ values rather than by ‘autonomy’ values even though the ‘moderation’ value emerge as a value of balance to reduce opposition between these types of values. The Cham craftsmen are influenced by values of belief, loyalty and conformity, rather than creativity, eagerness and studiousness. Also, these craftsmen are affected by ‘extrinsic’ values rather than ‘intrinsic’ values when they try to maintain their own traditional techniques and process to create pottery conforming to their culture rather than trying to seek and create novelty potteries.
According to findings, this study suggest that the Vietnam government should consider cultural factors to be the core criteria in policy making, career education, branding and marketing, etc… to uphold and develop the Cham traditional pottery. Besides, the improved general framework might be applied to examine in other cases or comparative researches impacts of culture on craft in different craft communities.
