Background and purpose: Previous researches have suggested that exercise training could improve the performance of physical, mental, and cognitive measures in the elderly. However, there were limited studies investigating the effect of exercise program in the elderly in Taiwan. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of a community-based group exercise on the physical, mental, and cognitive functions in middle-aged and elderly population.

Methods: A total of 16 participants participated in the community-based exercise training group were enrolled as experimental group. The exercise training program was 90 minutes once a week for a total of 24 weeks. Thirteen community residents, who did not enroll in any group exercise program, volunteered to participate in the control group and maintained their daily routine during the study. Both groups were assessed with physical, mental, and cognitive functions at the baseline test, middle test, post test, and follow-up test. Independent t test and paired t test were used to analyze the between-group and within- group differences.

Results: The experimental group, compared to control group, had significant improvement on SF-36 (ps. < .05). Both groups showed improvement in some physical and cognitive measures, but no significant differences in improvements were found between groups.

Conclusion: This study supports that the community-based group exercise program, in a regimen of 90 minutes session, once a week, 24 weeks total, can improve the quality of life in the middle-aged and elderly population.
