Deception has a negative effect on interpersonal interactions and may compromise the group goal and impede development of human civilization. Therefore, researchers and relevant practitioners (e.g., the police and executive managers) have been dedicated to understanding deception or lies. Through matching of interactive board games, this study explored and compared the facial cues (including facial muscles and facial expressions) of deceptive and honest behaviors as well as the durations of such behaviors in competitive and noncompetitive situations and under different cognitive processes and personal traits. According to hierarchical linear modeling analysis results (N = 58), (1) significant differences were observed in facial expressions of deceptive and honest behaviors; (2) significant interaction existed between deceptive behaviors and cognitive processes (behavioral demonstration and monitoring waiting) in terms of facial muscles; and (3) significant interaction existed between deceptive behaviors and Machiavellianism in terms of facial expressions and facial muscles. Finally, based on the research results, we provided further discussion and discourse on previous theories and expound this study’s contribution, limitation, and possible future directions of research.
