Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are the main structural form of most companies in Taiwan and most Taiwan SMEs are family business in different family network structure. Many past researches investigate how do SMEs grow with limited resources and ability but without specific conclusion of an over view in SMEs’ growth. In this paper, I retest the relation between R&D innovation and export strategy with SMEs’ growth and also explore if family control pattern may also reinforce or weaken the relation of innovation and export strategy to SMEs’ growth. I test the theory using the panel data of Taiwan manufacturing firms from TEJ selecting 607 companies as the representatives of growing companies over the period 2002-2012. The results showed that the export strategy has no significant impact on ROA growth of SME, but R&D innovation strategy has significant positive influences on ROA growth of SMEs. It was also found that the family ownership strucutre is significant positively influence the relationship between R&D innovation and SME’s performance growth.
