The study on seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers is a central topic in groundwater resources. In many countries around the world, groundwater salinization has occurred and limited the usage of fresh groundwater. Groundwater is the main freshwater resource in some coastal regions. How to protect the groundwater resources from pollutions (e.g. seawater intrusion) is the main objective.
The finite difference method is used to set up a numerical model for the governing equations in terms of the stream function and the solute transport equation. Numerical simulation on seawater intrusion was conducted in an ideal confined aquifer, and was validated with the classical Henry problem. In addition to the groundwater recharge, we also consider the impact of porosity and hydraulic conductivity on simulation results.
When groundwater recharge rate increases, the front of seawater intrusion move seaward. The greater hydraulic conductivity, the further the front of seawater intrusion moves inland. However, the effect of porosity on seawater intrusion is not obvious.
