Taiwan's last three decades of rapid economic growth have resulted in skyscrapers all over metropolitan areas and a surge in demand for underground parking garages. Most underground parking garages are indoor structures that have very little natural ventilation and lighting, thus with very poor air quality. This study aims to explore the air quality in the metropolitan shopping mall underground parking garage in northern Taiwan, the main content of research is consisted of the satisfaction survey of the air quality in the underground parking garage, the design of the underground parking garage and a survey of current status, and the actual measurement of the air quality in the underground parking garage.
In the current urban life & style, people do their grocery shopping at the shopping mall on weekends to buy enough food and items in daily use for the next week or two; therefore, the shopping mall is closely related to our daily life. The purpose is to understand the current status of the air quality in the shopping mall underground parking garages throughout the country and factors that affect the air quality, along with suggestions on how to improve the air quality in the underground parking garage, which can be used as reference on the improvement of the existing underground parking garages, as well as the design of the future underground parking garage. Concrete results of the study are summarized as follows:
1. Actual measurements of air pollutants in the underground parking garage: According to the on-site test, we have found that indoor levels of CO, CO2, PM10, and NOX concentrations of each case were higher than outdoor levels. Levels of CO, CO2, and NOX concentrations all had exceeded the indoor air quality standards. Pollutant concentrations in the main action line, entrance of the shopping mall, exhaust area, and motorcycle area were relatively higher. The ventilation volume of each case was designed in accordance with regulations and standards, but because of the start frequency of exhaust fan was uncertain, causing the indoor level of air pollutant concentrations exceeded the air quality standards.
2.Satisfaction survey of the air quality in the shopping mall underground parking garage of each case: If we rated the five items including very satisfied, satisfied, neither, dissatisfied, and very dissatisfied using the 5-point scale, the result we have obtained was between 2 to 3 points. In short, the overall satisfaction was acceptable.
3. Comparison values and actual measurement values of car and motorcycle emissions and exhaust volume calculation: In the situation when a floor was in a full capacity, in order to reduce the standard value of pollutant concentration of different cases, through estimations using formulas, we have obtained a result showing that the exhaust volume of the unit area needed was higher than NOX, but through actual measurements, the result showed the CO pollution is higher.
