Studies have indicated the fall prevention information and the support of significant others have a positive impact on fall prevention knowledge, attitudes and behavior. However, the relationship of fall prevention information and family support with fall prevention knowledge, attitude and behavior is not clear. This study investigated the relationship between fall prevention information obtained, family support and fall prevention knowledge, attitudes and behavior in elderly individuals admitted to an emergency room because of falls. This was a descriptive correlation design study with a secondary data analysis. A total of 291 participants, adults aged 65 or older, who visited the emergency department of a medical center in southern Taiwan due to falls, were enrolled from May to Oct, 2014. The data collected consisting of face to face interviews with a structured questionnaire, including information obtained, behavior, knowledge, attitudes and family support related to fall prevention, were retrieved and analyzed for the purposes of this study. The results showed that fall prevention information has a significant relationship with fall prevention knowledge, attitudes and behavior, with predictive power of 1.3%, 5.2% and 2.1%, respectively. Family support is the main predictor of fall prevention behavior and attitudes, with predictive power of 26% and 13%, respectively. The findings of this study can be used to develop fall prevention education programs for the elderly.
