The purpose of this study were to (1) examine the relationship between metacognitive strategies (i.e. planning, monitoring, and regulation) and creative thinking process (i.e. ideation and evaluation stage), and (2) examine the relationship between self-determined motivation (i.e. autonomous motivation and controlled motivation) and creative thinking process (i.e. ideation and evaluation stage) 534 college students from five colleges in Taiwan participated in this study. The participants completed a self-determined motivation scale, two divergent thinking tests with self-evaluation, and a metacognitive strategy scale in sequence. The data were analyzed by multiple regression. The result indicated that metacognitive strategies and self-determined motivation could significantly predict creative thinking process. Regarding metacognitive strategies, planning strategy had no significant effect on neither stages; monitoring strategy could negatively predict both stages; regulation strategy could positively predict both stages. In regard to self-determined motivation, autonomous motivation could positively predict both stages; controlled motivation could negatively predict both stages. As for moderating variables, none of the interaction between metacognitive strategies and self-determined motivation could significantly predict creative thinking process.
