big five personality trait
perceived organizational support
The purpose of this research was to investigate how personality traits influenced the turnover intention of practicing psychiatrists in Taiwan and the mediating role of self efficacy and entrepreneurial intention. Meanwhile, this study examined the relationship between perceived organizational support (POS) and turnover intention, and the mediating effect of organizational commitment.
We conducted a sensus to all psychiatrists currently practicing in Taiwan by delivering anominated questionnaire face-to-face, through mail, email, or facebook bulletin. One hundred and ninety-two samples were retrieved, which accounted for 13.6% of the population (N=1410). Regression analysis revealed: (1) Extraversion, Conscientiousness, neuroticism and openness to experience predicted self efficacy (E+, C+, O+, N-); (2) Openness to experience positively predicted entrepreneurial intention; (3) Extraversion negatively predicted turnover intention; (4) Openness to experience positively predicted turnover intention through partial medication by self efficacy and full mediation by entrepreneurial intention; (4) POS negatively predicted turnover intention through full mediation by organizational commitment.
Besides, among young psychiatrist (<10 years of practice), psychiatrists with manager or other positions appeared to have higher aggreableness than those without these positions, while hospital or clinic owners had higher openness to experiences compared to hired psychiatrists. Among senior psychiatrist (> 10 years of practice), hospital or clinic owners had lower neuroticism, and psychiatrists without any other positions (owner or manager) had lower self efficacy.
This empirical research examined how personal factors acted on the turnover intention and career decision of psychiatrists in Taiwan. Further study should be done to involve more psychiatrists and focused more on the relationship between person and environment.
