In a building, improperly installed dwelling services could affect not only their regular operations and maintenance but also the building’s aesthetic. Moreover, city landscapes may be severely damaged by ugly buildings’ exteriors .Pre-considered installation techniques applied in the design phase of construction cycles will effectively increase the building’s practical and artistic values.
In this study, a through post occupancy investigation over the issues of improper dwelling services installation is conducted around Tainan, Kaohsiung and Ping Tung area. Four basic principals of improving current installation drawbacks are presented. They are “hiding from view”, “semi-hollow shelter”, “merging into forms”and “alternative systems”. Acceptable installation techniques for various dwelling services are derived from these principals. To better understand the preference of the users and quantitatively evaluate affecting factors, a questionnaire analysis is applied. Method of Semantic Differential is used to analyze the common installation practices and the preference of recommended installation techniques. Interviewees include public servants, school faculty, professional engineers, and ordinary citizens in Ping Tung County. Data analysis techniques include mean value analysis, t-test, single factor variant analysis、correlation analysis and regression analysis.
1. In the post occupancy investigation, six major dwelling service equipments are noted unfavorable to most users through mean value analysis of preference and sentimental feeling. These equipments include air conditioner, solar water heater, natural gas pipe, stainless steel water tank, and lightning rod. It means the discontent of current installation practices. Therefore, it is necessary to study the questions and to find the solutions.
2. The recommended installation methods brought out by this study on the basis of four principals mentioned above are well accepted than the traditional ones in terms of the meal values. All solutions except the reinforced concrete water tank solution have the values well over favorable standard. It is reasonably surmised that the recommended solutions could be accepted by the major public.
3. There is no conspicuous difference between genders in grading the preference and affecting factors of the common installation methods, while the difference obvious among different occupations. As for the recommended installation methods, most of them with few exceptions are categorized no conspicuous difference in terms of genders and occupations.
4. The acceptance of the installation methods is correlated with sentimental feeling of the aesthetic of these techniques. The degree of acceptance is related with buildings’ creativity, physical practicality, harmony, and simplicity, too. Among the factors, “creativity” and “practicality” play major roles, “harmony” the next, and “simplicity” the minor.
