Based on past literatures, types of living arrangement may be related to mental health and life satisfaction of older adults. The aims of this study were to explore: (1) the differences in family support, mental health, and life satisfaction of older adults between the three living arrangement groups of coresidence (living with children), near/quasi-coresidence, and neither coresidence nor near/quasi-coresidence; and (2) whether the family support played a mediating role between the living arrangement and mental health and life satisfaction.
A cross-sectional study design was conducted. Older adults who aged 65 and over and had children were recruited through convenient sampling from different communities in Tainan. By using standardized questionnaires, data collection included social-demographic data, family support, mental health, and life satisfaction.
There were significant differences in family support, mental health and life satisfaction between the three types of living arrangement. Though family support did not play a mediating role between living arrangements and mental health, it did play a full mediating role between the neither coresidence nor near/quasi-coresidence type and life satisfaction.
Under the specific type of living arrangements, the life satisfaction of older adults can be maintained or improved through family support provided by their children.
