Objective: The aim of this study is to measure Outdoor Fitness Equipment (OFE) usage. It includes assessing several precise OFE usage indicators: OFE users number, OFE usage frequency and OFE usage duration.
Methods: Dongning Park was observed during three seasons: autumn 2013, spring 2014 and winter 2015 with direct observation method applying video recording. The Dongning Park OFE user’s age, gender, OFE usage type and OFE usage indicators were documented. The observational data were collected over three weeks period of time for nine observational days, each observational day during morning peak from 6:30 to 8:30 AM and evening peak from 15:30 to 17:30 PM. The inter-rater reliability test showed strong results (0.84–0.95) for all recorded user’s characteristics throughout study.
Results: During three seasons, totally 3337 OFE users were observed, detected 6457 OFE usage frequency, and registered 661 hours 27 minutes 38 seconds of OFE usage duration, OFE usage duration mean per person is 0:11:54. Female users (2161) outnumber males (1176). Older adults were a majority in age groups (2617). Winter total OFE usage duration showed the lowest results (161 hours 30 minutes 55 seconds).
Conclusion: First, observational data from OFE users number and OFE usage duration indicators suggests that Dongning Park OFE are being extensively used. Second, the OFE usage behavior analysis patterns showed that 51% of OFE users engaged only to one OFE piece per visit, it is also concludes that 90% of OFE users tend to involved with just two or one OFE type per visit. Third, the two-way ANOVA results suggests that there were significant differences in terms of OFE use duration within morning and evening peaks and within weekday and weekend observations. Fourth, however MANOVA results showed that there were no significant differences on season, weekday an AM/PM conditions for OFE user’s age, gender, OFE usage type in OFE usage duration. Overall, in older adult’s age group, female users were significantly more likely to be involved in OFE physical activity than males and tend to socialize while using OFE.
