Aging society is a global issue. To provide adequate assistance, support and service to the elderly, their needs must be identified. However, much of the needs remain hidden because the elderly do not, or are unaware or unable to articulate their needs. Particularly in the Chinese culture, the elderly tend to express content but not complaint. Nevertheless, hidden needs may be observed by young people who live with the elderly. Therefore, the research aims to uncover hidden needs of the elderly from the information provided by younger people.
The research employs both qualitative and quantitative methods to gain insights about the elderly’s hidden needs. In particular, Grounded Theory and text mining are used to analyze data collected from blog posts and forum discussions. Two platforms were implemented for data collection, a discussion forum and a Facebook fan page. Due to insufficient data samples, the research turned to collect data from existing popular platforms.
Through the qualitative, Grounded Theory, analysis, the research concludes that for the hidden needs of the elderly, attentions should be focused on family communication, product support and travel planning. The conclusion is verified through quantitative, text mining, analysis. To address these needs, service designs are proposed to facilitate the communication between the elderly and their family, to assist the elderly in using new products, and to stimulate new travel services tailored to the elderly and their family.
