Widowhood is one of the most stressful events in life which has negative consequences in the physical, psychological and social aspects. Social relationships can buffer loneliness, social isolation caused by widowhood and reduce illness. However, elderly men have less social support and social interaction after widowhood than women .Therefore, this study intends to explore social relationships to adapt to the life of elderly widowers within three years of widowhood.
This is a qualitative study and inclusion criteria is men over the age of 65 who were widowed within three years. Thirteen participants were interviewed in this study. This study found that:(1)The social relationships of elderly widowers have cohort differences.(2)Children and daughter-in-law are the main providers of social support.(3)Developing interdependent social relationships of elderly widowers bring stable and long-lasting social connections, and helping to restore the adaptation of life after widowhood. The findings illustrate that the elderly widowers need to have more interaction with younger people and create a two-way interpersonal interaction with elderly widowers, giving them opportunity to demonstrate self-worth in order to build up good social relationships and avoid social isolation.
