Aging populations and urbanization processes are growing fast worldwide especially for developing countries. In Vietnam, there were only few studies on the needs of using community health services of the elderly people; however they were mostly addressed on elderly in rural areas. Thus, this study added to the knowledge and understanding of the needs of community health among older people in urban areas.
The purposes of this study were: (1) to describe the needs of community health services for elderly people in the urban area, (2) to assess the impacts of demographic characteristics on those needs, and (3) to explore the reflection of health care workers on the needs toward improving community health services.
This was a cross-sectional research using mixed methods to collect data from (1) the group of 199 people who were 60 years of age and older, no cognitive impairment from Minh Khai district, Phu Ly City, Ha Nam Province, Vietnam, and (2) a small group of health providers (05 people). Study instrument included Demographic Status Info Sheet, Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire, Needs of Community Health Care Services Assessment Sheet and an Open-ended Interview Guide.
Findings of this study indicated that about 76% to 92% of participants need to the health service types listed in the questionnaire Among these health services needed, to know how their health status may progress, to establish health care facilities, and to have elderly health care specialists in community health are the three most highly demand ones.
Chi-square tests were used to analyze the relationship between demographic characteristics and the needs of using health services, results showed that age groups (X2=7.832, p < 0.05), economic status (X2=31.72 , p < 0.05), education levels (X2=19.21 , p < 0.05), previous occupation (X2=20.97, p < 0.05), marital status (X2=10.04, p < 0.05), and living arrangement (X2=19.53, p < 0.05) were significantly related to the needs of using health services in community.
The results from the qualitative interviews provided the reflections of medical staff toward community health services included strengthening health-monitoring system; improving human resources and capability of health providers, establishing elderly health care facilities in the community; having specific policies for elderly health care.
Findings indicated that there is a high demand of community health services for elderly in the urban area, which requires strengthening the health services settings to meet the health care needs of the elderly people as corresponding the population aging and urbanization.
