中文摘要 推動學校圖書館利用教育,提升學生閱讀興趣,增進學生閱讀素養,培養學生寫作與自學能力,一直是各級教育主管機關的重要施政項目,為了推動中學生閱讀活動,自2001年起成立了「中學生網站」平臺,提供高中生讀書心得與小論文競賽的平臺,迄今已有13年,「中學生網站」保存了大量學生閱讀活動的相關資料,是閱讀主題與閱讀偏好的重要資料庫。
本研究為了探討高中生閱讀活動特性,以「中學生網站」歷年學生參賽相關資料為基礎,使用商業智慧軟體進行大數據分析,探討高中生閱讀主題與閱讀偏好,希望研究成果可作為高中圖書館館藏及圖書利用教育服務的參考,所使用的資料包括讀書心得參賽資料、讀書心得獲獎資料、小論文參賽資料、小論文獲獎資料等四大類檔案。利用商業智慧軟體進行大數據分析,並且將分析結果以表格化及圖形化方式呈現。
研究結果顯示高中生讀書心得書目大多偏好小說與文學類,這與圖書館借閱率以語文類為最多的現象一致,高中生小論文寫作主題則以商業類佔最多數,研究結果也顯示參加讀書心得比賽的學生以一、二年級居多,參加小論文比賽的學生以二、三年級佔多數,此外,六個直轄市(六都)高中職學校參賽人數與獲獎人數都高於其他非六都之十二個區域,顯示讀書心得及小論文比賽,存在著很大的城鄉差距,普通高中在參賽人數與獲獎人數方面都高於技職學校的學生,公立學校在參賽人數與獲獎人數方面都高於私立學校。這些寶貴的資料將可提供高中圖書館館藏發展及提升圖書利用教育服務之參考。
英文摘要 SUMMARY
The nationwide reading and essay competitions for senior high-school students in Taiwan have been held over 10 years since 2001. The big data relating to the reading and essay competitions are stored in the website named “Students Website”. This study is to investigate and explore the characteristics of reading activities of high-school students by using the Business Intelligence and the Online Analytical Processing. The analysis results were tabulated and presented graphically. This research results could be served as an important reference for the management of high school library in book collections and services.
INTRODUCTION

Understanding the behavior and preference of high-school students in reading and writing activities is very important in high-school library management, especially in book collections and purchases under limited budget. Encouraging high-school students to involve more reading and writing, the nationwide reading and essay competitions for senior high-school students in Taiwan have been held since 2001. The big data of the nationwide reading and essay competitions for senior high-school students are stored in the high-school students’ website. These big data are valuable in exploring the student reading activities and preferences as well as in the school library management.


MATERIALS AND METHODS

The big data of nationwide reading and essay competitions for senior high-school students in Taiwan were analyzed to investigate and explore the characteristics of reading activities of high-school students by using the Business Intelligence system. The integrative, multi-dimensional, and impromptu functions of Business Intelligence system are very important for big data analysis. Business Intelligence system could provide the full-scale perspectives for comprehensive considerations to instruct the decision makers toward the right direction. In reading activity analysis, the reading competition data between 2008 and 2013 were used, while in writing activity analysis, the essay contest data between 2009 and 2014 were used. The messy and disorderly big data were categorized into a variety of classes, such as book title, essay subject, school name, student name, city name, etc., and then the big data were transformed into systematic diagrams conveying knowledge and insight in the online data warehouse with the help of the Business Intelligence system. Online data warehouse integrates all the information as report forms and OLAP forms as well as further exhibits data by the intuitive visualization of tables, run charts, histograms, pie charts, or line diagrams, and so on.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
According to the big data of nationwide reading and essay competitions for senior high-school students in Taiwan, we completed the following analyses: (1) The number of individual students participating reading and essay competitions; (2) Number of authors of an paper attending the essay composition; (3) Statistic distributions of 10th to 12th grades students who attended the compositions and awarded; (4) Spatial distributions of students who attended the competitions; (5) Comparison of students attending the reading and essay competitions in public and private schools; (6) Comparison of students attending the reading and essay competitions in big cities and other cities; (7) The difference of the attendances of students attending the reading and essay competitions in general high schools and vocational schools; (8) Popular books used in reading compositions and the popular essay topics chosen by students in essay competitions; (9) The growth tendencies number of students attending the reading and essay competitions.

CONCLUSION
The big data of nationwide reading and essay competitions for senior high-school students in Taiwan were analyzed to investigate and explore the characteristics of reading activities of high-school students. These big data are stored in the high-school students’ website, simply named “Students Website”. The results of this study show that most students who participated the reading competitions were in 10th and 11th grades, especially in 11th grade, while most student who participated the essay contests were in 11th and 12th grades, especially in 12th grade. This result displays that reading competition is easier to attract the lower grade students to participate. Because attending essay contest needs better writing skills, students in the lower grades could not be ready to attend the essay contest. Students need gradual training in writing skills. The higher grade students have higher willingness to attend essay contest. Our analysis results also show the preferences of student in reading and in the writing topics. Students like to read the books of novels and literatures. Students prefer choosing commercial-related topics in essay contest. The public schools, compared with private schools, have higher percentage of students in attending the reading and essay competitions. The schools in big cities, compared with schools in country sides, have higher present of students in attending the reading and essay competitions. This research results could be served as an important reference for the management of high school library in book collections and services.
