Background: While it is well-known that physical activity has great benefits with regard to preventing disease or delaying aging, there are few studies on the association between the perceptions of the local environmental features including exercise facilities and the levels of physical activity, especially with regard to elderly people living in rural areas.
Objectives: The mains aims of this study were to explore the perceptions of environmental features held by elderly people living in rural areas, as well the related levels of physical activity. More specifically, it examined the association between these perceptions and whether these subjects engaged in at least 60 minutes of walking on at least five days per week.
Methods: The study used a cross-sectional correlation design to recruit 337 community-dwelling elderly people in rural areas of southern Taiwan. A structured questionnaire was applied to collect information on the subjects’ demographic characteristics and their perceptions of the local environment, and the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE) was used to collected data on their levels of physical activity. Hierarchical logistic regressions were used to identify the association between the subjects’ perceptions of environmental features and whether they engaged in sufficient walking, which was defined as at least 60 minutes of walking on at least five days per week.
Results: We found that walking was a common physical activity for these subjects, although only 33.2% met the criterion for engaging in sufficient amounts of this activity. Most of the respondents stated that their communities lacked appropriate facilities for black while they took the exercises. After the hierarchical logistic regression and adjusting for the demographic characteristics, the results showed that there was significant association between the perception of the places for doing leisure physical activity were too far from the subjects’ residences and the failure to engage in sufficient walking (AOR=1.9, 95% C.I. = 1.04~3.28).
Conclusion and Application: The study found that most of the respondents did not engage in sufficient walking, as defined in this work. We thus suggest that local authorities should provide more facilities for physical activity that can be used by community-dwelling elderly people in rural areas.
