英文摘要 Background: Generally, dengue health education is not sufficient to change student’s behavior to do preventive practices. Enhance field experience in it can be a solution to solve this problem. However, until now, few studies explored the effectiveness of enhancing field experience in dengue health education for elementary school students toward knowledge, self-efficacy and behavior to do dengue prevention.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of dengue health education with field experience on knowledge, self-efficacy and behavior among elementary school students.
Method: An experimental design with two groups with pretest-posttest and 1-month follow-up was conducted among six public elementary schools in Bali, Indonesia. These six schools were randomly sampling from 17 schools in Panjer and Sesetan areas, and randomly assigned to experimental (EG) and comparison (CG) groups using computer software (random.org) for randomization. The students in EG received dengue health education through lecturing session and field experience, and students in CG only received lecturing session. A total of 299 fifth-grade students in both groups (153 in EG and 146 in CG) completed this study. All primary outcomes, student’s knowledge, self-efficacy and behavior to do dengue prevention, were collected using a self-develop questionnaire. For analysis, paired t-test and RM-ANOVA were used to measure the effect of intervention over the time (within the group). Meanwhile, ANCOVA was used to measure the differences of intervention effects between the groups.
Results: From within-group analysis, it was found that after the intervention, mean score for student’s knowledge and self-efficacy in both groups were significantly increased (p < .01). For behavior, result showed that one-month after the intervention,
student’s mean score in EG was non-significantly increase (t= -1.74, p= .08), while students in CG showed a significantly decreased (t= 2.37, p= .02). However, when compared it between two groups, students in EG had significantly higher mean scores of self-efficacy (F = 6.47, p <.01, 95% CI 0.83 to 6.48) and behavior (F = 22.1, p < 0.01, 95% CI 0.39 to 0.95) to do dengue prevention than student in CG.
Conclusion: Enhance field experience in dengue health education, compared to lecturing session alone, has a positive impact, especially for self-efficacy and behaviour. Accordingly, this study suggests that provide field experience while delivering dengue health education for elementary school students is needed to influence student’s participation to do dengue prevention.
