Unlike IQ test norms, most affective norms currently in use are not age-adjusted. However, age-related positivity effect found in many life-span studies suggests that younger adults and older adults may react differently to identical affective stimuli. This thesis focused on examining the age differences in affective evaluations of Chinese antonyms. Furthermore, it examined whether or not affective stimuli should be adjusted by age. The first study examined age effects in four affective evaluations of antonyms in terms of valence, arousal level, concreteness and familiarity. Age differences were found in the affective evaluations of Chinese antonyms. Study 2 used a mixed list of antonyms and abstract neutral words to rule out the possibility that the result found in study 1 was due to using a pure list of antonyms as stimuli. Study 3 which was conducted to verify that affective evaluation of words gives the same results regardless of whether it is done by a paper and pencil format or using a computer interface. The fourth study used the item response theory to scale a list of Chinese antonyms. The purpose is to demonstrate how one might further quantify stimulus materials used in the study of emotion.
The most important contribution of this thesis work lies in demonstrating age effect in a cross-sectional study of affective evaluation of words. This finding pointed out a weakness in the affective norms currently in use and argued for the development of age-adjusted affective norms.
