The focus of this thesis is to analyze the forming and influence brought to modern Taiwanese Literary circles by “the establishment of The Literature prizes of United Daily News & China Times ,” as one of the “ significant events of Taiwanese modern literature development.” That is to analyze the working and presentation of the literary creation and literary criticism. Through the historical development of the Two Daily Literature Prizes, the causes of some phenomena in Taiwanese Literature must be figured out.
First, with the observation on the historical foundation of the Two Daily Literature Prizes—under the two political groups : “Li Huan— yu Chizhong — Gao Hsinchiang” and “Wang Sheng — Wang Tiwu —Ya Xian,” this thesis dissects the presentation of the two major Daily supplements. Based on Bourdieu’s introspect sociology, this thesis studies the three genus of prizewinning creations: “the novel”, “the narrative poem” as well as “the report literature,” and tries to express that, in the literary field, the literary creations corresponded to social atmosphere as well as the literary pulsation of college school, and this thesis also examines how the literary esthetics was shaped and interpreted by the discourse of literary criticism in the finals sessions.
In this thesis, the symbolic authority operation of the three groups—the party-state system literature group, college literary group, and the realism-centered literary group, could be divided into three criticism systems: the Chinese system, the foreign literature system and dominant culture. Under these systems, here came two axes. One was the longitudinal time axis, which inherited classic lyric Chinese tradition, valued the image and the rhetoric, and corresponded to the Chinese legitimate culture imagination of mainstream ideology. The other was sidelong spatial axis, which caused the waves of Taiwanese Literature criticism with the scholar's translated literature and the translation theories.
Under the interaction of the two axes, a imagination of high quality literature, actually a literary prejudice, was presented. The content of this imagination means a literary creation with both Chinese classical rhetoric as well as western literary skills.
The establishment of Two Daily Literature Prizes, just coincided with “ the Native Literature polemic.” The realism seemed to take the predominant position, but from the literature prizes, a field built by the literary groups and the two major supplements, we can see that the modernism and the following after-modernism, indeed took the predominant position through the design of Two Daily Literature Prizes. And this resulted in that the postmodernism literature has emerged from the postcolonalism Taiwan, and resulted in the literary prejudice that the modernism surpasses the realism.
In Taiwanese literary field, postmodernism or postcolonialism, has been disputed for the position. Through a historical retrospect of the prizewinning works of the Two Daily Literature Prizes, this thesis tries to express how the historical causes leaded to some phenomena in Taiwanese Literature today.
