In Taiwan under Japanese rule, due to the colonial modernity purposely implemented by the colonizer, diverse and complicated historical process structure has emerged both socially and culturally.Under the stimulation and impact of both colonial modern civilization and local traditional conservatism, at the time in Taiwan not only did city size and phenomenon on consumption with the prototye of capitalism started to appear, literarily abundant and spectacular work and discourse were also presented from the dialectic between traditional scholar and modern interllectuals. In such a specific urban society under colonial rule. Based on two tabloids "Fong Yueh" and "369 tabloid" published at that time and Geishas with whom colonizers and interllectuals (modern or traditional) have both contacted. In this thesis, we try to analyze how power holders reproduce and form new literature field and social status which were favorable for themselves by utilizing the cultural capital possessed by these power holders through the strategy of the consumption of desire toward Geishas.
Therefore, the main analysis framework of this thesis is based on exterior social environment and interior literary phenomenon.
As for the exterior social environment, we try to reconstruct the rise and development of Taiwan's main cities and male-based consumer behaviors. We also survey places such as teahouses and taverns in which Geisha services were provieded, these places can only exist due to accumulated consuming ability to certain degree.Under this capital-consuming environment, the signification of femininity started to transform by the stimulation of the consumption of desire and the unique fashion image derived by Taiwanese Geisha while colonizer and males were manipulating power through actural materiality.
As for the interior literary phenomenon, a specific structual co-sourse relation was formed by the literature field and social space composed of above-mentioned interllectuals, therefore, when scholoars started to transform the consumption of desire toward Geishas mentioned above into character writing and works, the whole mechanism of literature field can begin to take place.Hence by commencing detailed text-analysis of newspapers, periodicals, novels, poetry and even social activities (such as music, drame and dance), a better understanding can be obtained as how colonizers and males transform actual materility into cultural capital which is more abstract and vague, then continuously produce and reproduce their literary relations and social status. In other word, through the strategy of Geisha writing, we can observe how colonizer and males manupulate power utilizing a hidden sybbolism.
Therefore, in this thesis, we intend to give a microscopic analysis of political, economic, and literary power governance by colonizers and males on the basis of the consumption of desire and referenced by exterior social texts and interior literature texts in the colonial modernity society in Taiwan during 1930s.By taking Geisha who bears a special social status between eroticism and skill as a viewpoint for deep observation, we hope to open a new perspective for literature in 1930s and then reveal a more gorgeous and rich female figure.
