This research was to investigate the factors which influenced high school students’ smoking behaviors based on Problem Behavior Theory. According to that, the purposes of this research were as the following. The first was to compare the personality system, the perceived environment system, and the behavior system with students’ smoking behaviors. And the second was to examine the factors of those systems which can explain students’ smoking behaviors. The senior high and vocational schools’ students in Tainan City at 2003 were considered as a whole population. It used the probability proportionate sampling method to collect the research subjects. Excluding the missing data, there were 1,382 subjects.
The results were as below: (1) Students were different in school level, gender, family support satisfaction, families’ attitude to smoking, families' smoking behaviors, peers’ smoking behaviors, perceived cigarette was easy to access, academic performance, and the deviant behaviors when they compared to students’ smoking behaviors. (2) School level, gender, families’ attitude to smoking, peers’ smoking behaviors, perceived cigarette was easy to access, academic performance, and the deviant behaviors could explain the students’ smoking behaviors. According to the results, some advises for future researches and cessations were discussed in this research.
