The purpose of this study is to study the perceptions of beach tourists towards marine debris. This study is divided into the following parts. First, to understand tourists' perceptions of debris items on the beach. Second, to realize how tourists deal with marine debris. Third, to understand viewpoints of tourists, what is an effective way to reduce marine debris. Fourth, the correlation between the environmental protection actions and people’s behavior towards solving the problem of beach debris were evaluated. Lastly, according to the results mentioned above, this study wanted to find out the most suitable ways to reduce and remove marine debris via good planning and management as a solution.
This study uses a questionnaire survey to analyze the beach tourists’ perceptions on marine debris in Kenting Nanwan beaches. The data in the questionnaires were analyzed using SPSS for Windows22.0 software.
This study was conducted from July 2017 to August 2017 in Kenting Nanwan. The sample was 252 beach tourists. The results indicated that the participants were mainly woman (62.3%), from 20 to 29 years old (66.3%). 74.2% of people agree that the litter on the beach is a problem. Plastic bottles are the most commonly found debris item on the beach. 98.4% of people will visit again due to the cleanliness of the beach. 44% of people will visit again if additional fees for beach cleaning were imposed on tourists while entering the beach. 88.9% of people claimed that they didn't litter on the beach. Cigarette butts and fishing gears will be directly discarded to the beach by few people. 75% of people believed that the best way of mitigating the problem was by fining. The chi - square test showed that men were more likely to throw litter on the beach than women. The Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient test showed that there is a significant and positive correlation between the action of environmental related activities and the behavior of dealing garbage.
Finally, according to the results, the study offers suggestions regarding future efforts focusing on debris reduction strategies to further address the problem of garbage pollution from beach tourists.
