In today’s rapidly changing environment, crisis management has become a critical issue for all organizations. Suddenness, time compression, and uncertainty are the characteristics of business crises that are difficult to predict. Therefore, to enhance organizations’ ability in dealing with crises is one of the most important tasks for managers. Additionally, with the progress in information technology (IT), using IT to assist collaboration and to facilitate the flow of critical knowledge among companies in order to create a win-win situation are becoming popular. This practice is constantly referred to as collaborative commerce (c-commerce).
Consequently, this study aims to investigate, in the context of c-commerce, whether organizations can take advantage of their collaborative activities with their business partners to facilitate the flows of critical knowledge among them in order to improve their abilities to responding to business crises. To be more specific, the focus is on how knowledge inflows and outflows can directly and/or indirectly affect the level of the internal crisis readiness and collaborative commerce performance of an organization.
To achieve the research purpose, survey data collected from the employees of a motor corporation that continuously perform collaborative activities with its business partners and recently encountered a severe business crisis in 2011 was used. Based on the results of the analysis of 290 survey responses, knowledge outflow was found to have an insignificant direct effect on c-commerce performance, but it can indirectly influence c-commerce performance through internal crisis readiness. Additionally, knowledge inflow can both directly and indirectly influence c-commerce performance. The implications of these results are discussed, along with the suggestions for c-commerc corporations regarding how they can enhance their crisis management abilities and performances during crises.
